Poem 12: Suppose
I decided that I didn’t want to go to college.
Felt that school wasn’t my thing.
That I already knew all the people that I wanted to know,
And was looking to get a job,
Looking to make money,
Looking to grow up faster.
Suppose
I did decide to go to college,
But chose to follow my moms footsteps.
Go down the nursing path
And do years and years of school.
To end up in a hospital
Helping people everyday.
Too bad blood freaks me out.
Suppose
I chose a different school.
Or I chose different roommates.
Or chose not to break up with my ex boyfriend.
Or chose not to study abroad.
Or chose not to eat lunch today,
I’d probably be quite hungry right now.
Suppose
I was aware of
All these decisions.
Not even just the big ones.
But the little ones that we make constantly.
And how every single one takes our life in a different direction.
It’s easy to get lost in the what if’s.
But what could have been does not replace what is.
And that’s the most important reminder of them all.
