Poem 11: Looking in the mirror
Two heads of thick brown hair
Brushed, styled, textured.
Two sets of deep dark eyes
Tired, misty, watchful.
Two identical laughs fill a room
Brought out by a joke that wasn’t all that funny.
It wasn’t always easy
As two things so similar don’t always connect.
But in a battle someone has to win
Sometimes by defeating the other or sometimes, by joining forces.
Observing now
From a new perspective
And seeing how it’s the shirt off her back
With tears in her eyes.
Seeing how much she gives versus how much she takes.
Feeling guilt for the past but awareness for the future.
Aware that she’s living her life for the first time too
She doesn’t have all the answers
This world is just as new to her as it is to others.
Like the sky you need cloudy days to have sunny ones
And the trail to the top has to be uphill.
But life is smoother when it’s with each other instead of against
And that is the difference between now and then.
