Poem 10: Breakfast for two
The hum of the fridge in a dimly lit kitchen
Pulling the handle and being greeted with a rush of cold air
Grabbing the eggs, the milk, the fruit
Tired eyes beginning to wake up
Morning smells fill the air
As eggs are cracked into the pan
You notice the cartons go quicker now
You used to make two but now you make four
Looking at the fruit on the counter
The blueberries are almost gone
There was a time that you would have taken the last handful no thought
Now you eat only a few and let the second plate have the rest
It’s now two cups of coffee steaming at the table
It’s now two ready plates, patiently awaiting their food
It’s one half of you still tucked in bed
Unaware of what’s waiting downstairs
But sleepy footsteps are heard by the stairs
And thankful eyes fall upon the table
Grateful for the scene in front of them
For this small act filled with so much sincerity
Never did you think the day would come
Where you would find so much importance
In sitting and enjoying
Breakfast for two
