Poem 9: Mind over matter
Friends come and go like leaves on the trees
But the memories always stay
Aging family members once alive with stories
Become files shelved away in our minds
Now the sun sinks low and darkness fills a room
And open eyes blink at the popcorn ceiling
A restless mind whirs about
Time may come and go
But the memories always stay
In a war with our mind
Wearys eyes lose the fight
Sent into a battle against the past
As the ghosts of our former selves come alive once again
Reliving the smiles when the relationship was still new and innocent
Before the arguments took over
Reminders of when our only responsibly was playing outside with our childhood friends
Not sure how any of them are now
These moments seem almost haunted
Laughing at us from a distance, as we chase after a point we can never return back too
And the late hours of the night
Reminds us of these moments
That have now just become faded souvenirs of our life
The evening hours slip away
As they always do
Waking up in with the sun climbing through the windows
Our eyes never feel quite rested enough
The morning begins and these memories slip back to the alleyways of our mind
Leaving us no other choice but to carry on and leave them behind
