Poem 7: Hometown blues
The chaos of a college life
All of us get wrapped up without notice
Like a last minute gift on christmas day
Then suddenly schools out
You’re home again
Dinners on the table at 6 o’clock
Just like it’s always been as far back as you can remember
It may feel similar
But it’s not quite the same as it used to be
Dad’s hair looks a little grayer than it did last time
And mom hugs you a little longer every time you leave
Younger siblings are now bigger and taller
And you no longer look as much like the oldest
But here we are
Eating dinner in the unassigned assigned seats we’ve been sitting in since we were young
Time moves slower at home
Like a breath of fresh air
But parents always wave goodbye
Hoping you don’t forget about them
As you get sent back out, out into the rush of it all.
