Outline 2

Intro:

  • Hi my name is Maddie McDonald and this is Andrew Miller and today we will be showing you guys how to lobster trap.
  • Some of you may be surprised to find out that lobster trapping is a shared skill of ours, but that’s because we decided we’d keep you on your toes

Explanation:

  • Anyways to start, lobsters are caught sustainably using traps, which are left on the seafloor (show trap) and are attached to a line and buoy on surface (show buoy)
  • Buoys are usually detailed so that you don’t accidentally take someone else’s lobsters and nobody takes yours
  • Once the trap is on the ocean floor, they are left out for 3ish days before being checked
  • As most of us are, lobsters are enticed by a tasty meal, for humans that may mean a restaurant quality dish, but thankfully all the lobsters want is some smelly, fishy bait.
  • Once the lobsters are enticed we use a hauler to pull the buoy alongside the side of the boat, and pull it in.
  • A hauler is kind of like a fancy fishing rod for the traps and can be used electronically or by hand,
  • After it’s pulled up the sternman or captain clears out any excess seaweed, crabs or fish that may have gotten stuck in the trap.

ANDREW TALKS

  • We both grew up on different cape’s and spent summers by the ocean (cape cod and cape elizabeth)
  • For me lobstering is something my grandfather used to do, he was a big fishing/clamming/lobster guy so it’s nice to be able to recall this from him, for andrew lobstering was something he grew up doing with his family and friends, so now there’s just no unlearning it
  • It’s a unique, exciting summer time activity and definitely an interesting skill that we were lucky enough to be able to learn
