> Outline
- Explain the concept of lobstering
- Lobsters are caught sustainably using traps, which are left on the seafloor, coupled by vertical line and buoy on surface
- Traps are left for ~3 days before being checked
- Lobsters are enticed by the bait, and once they enter they usually can’t escape
- Using a hauler (electric, gas, hand) the buoy is caught alongside the starboard side of the boat, and pulled up
- Sternman or captain will clear out any seaweed, crabs, fish, and lobsters in the trap.
- Lobsters are checked for size and eggs
- A good trap would be 3-5 lb of bug
- Lobster gauge for length (oversize/under) from eye socket to end of carapace
- Short = 3 1/4 in
- Big = 5 in
- Female lobsters with eggs get notched and released
- pre-notched lobsters have to be released for conservation of species
- Usually the biggest too, maybe mention how it can be frustrating
- Bait bag will be emptied into the water, and replaced
- 2-3 fish for each bag
- Baits used are usually pogies, mackerel, red fish, and herring. We get it salted in a tub from portland docks, smells real bad
- New bait bag is loaded in, tied down, and re-set either in a new place or relatively the same place if the haul was good.
Why this skill?
- Both grew up on cape’s (cape cod and cape elizabeth)
- A family thing (my grandfather was a big fishing/clamming/lobster guy idk about you)
- Exciting summer time activity and an interesting skill to be able to learn
- Print lobster
