Nypd-incompetent-subway-shooting-cut-funding

This first article is about throwing funding at the police and it was written by the WSN editorial board on April 18th. Right away this article is a little unique to the other articles I have chosen because it is an editorial piece. The other day there was a shooting on a Brooklyn subway, where the gunman released smoke bombs and the proceeded to open fire. In response to this event the Mayor, Eric Adams has discussed having more police stations around the subway as well as maybe installing metal detectors at the entrances of the subways. Apparently, the NYPD was not able to respond adequately to the events that happened and this along with prior errors, is deeming the NYPD incompetant. One of the officers who arrived upon the scene had a broken radio and was unable to call in details on the shooting, leaving the shooter to have time to free the station, order a sandwich and then proceed to call in a hint on himself. After already increasing funding, people are worried about continuing to fund the police if they are seemingly slacking at their job.

Nyu-response-coral-tower-mental-health-crisis

This second article I chose is about students who are upset about NYU’s way of dealing with mental health. This article was written by Alex Toy on April 18th. Five residents of a suite building at NYU went to their building directors when one of their suitemates was dealing with a mental health crisis.  The directors refused to listen to them as they tried to help their friend, who has been declining their offers to help him. Their concerns towards him were raised when they found him wandering through the kitchen with forks and knives and then also when they found a large kitchen knife in his cabinet. He was in a state of psychosis, and now the roommates were not only concerned for him but also concerned for their own safety. After trying to speak with many other people and get help, they were told that they were not allowed to discuss details of this case with anyone. More into the semester the student was often found yelling and cursing in the common room worrying that his roommates might kill him, and when officers finally got involved, it felt like they couldn’t care less. The article goes on about the troubled roommate and the lack of attention towards what was happening, even including voicemails from the staff to them. It’s just scary because mental health is so prominent in everyone’s lives and it’s something that deserves to be taken care of.
