Journal #7: In chapter 7, storytelling and feature techniques, I think there is a lot of stuff we should take note on especially as all of us begin writing our features. One subcategory that I believe is good to focus on is the reporting tools sections. The features we are writing includes us having to interview people and in this part of the article it says that good storytelling requires using proper observation and gathering details. It says a good way to gather information is to take in as much as you can, you don’t know what you’ll want when writing your story so having more information is better than having less. This is something I have been trying to do as I interview people for my own story. After gathering this surplus of info, the chapter states that it is important to remain precise in your writing by taking proper notes when you find the dialogue that could help your story. Another thing I thought was important and stood out to me because it’s something I struggle with was descriptive techniques. This talks about how having too much description can clutter a story yet too little will leave people confused. You want readers to want to read your story but you also want them to understand your point, so it’s all about finding that balance of where you want to add the important details.
