Journal #4: In the second chapter of Writing and Reporting news, one thing I found interesting was the tell a friend technique. According to this chapter, the tell a friend technique is a natural conversational method that can be very important in broadcast writing. I’ve never heard of this technique before so I think that’s why it stood out to me. It is beneficial because when writing a story and thinking about it like you are telling the story to a friend, your writing may become more understandable. Using this theory can help you to write your story in a more conversational tone while still providing facts and information. Another thing that stood out to me was the chart on page thirty four that gave an example of the basic news story. We had a chart that kind of looked like this is my english comp class to help us write our intros and conclusions so when I saw it, it kind of felt familiar. The chart in this book was an upside down triangle that breaks down the steps to writing a news story and I think it could be important to look at this chart when writing because you can check if your story lines up with the inverted triangle.
- News story idea #1- Dining hall food reviews (casual) taste test and ask students reviews on popular items at the dining hall. Ex: ice cream flavors, pasta, fries, sandwiches.
- News story idea #2- Roommate resolutions: talk to people about their roommates and see how people deal with having a roommate they don’t necessarily love. This column could give advice and it would probably also be best if the sources remained anonymous.
