Journal #2

Journal #2:

One thing I found interesting about this reading was that it showed me there was more to journalism than I had originally thought. In my eyes it was something kind of simple, a way to report opinions or write down your thoughts. After reading this I became aware that there is actually a lot of history in journalism, almost just as much as other professions. On the first page it talks about how most doctors don’t know the history of medicine, lawyers don’t know the history of laws and likewise that most journalists don’t know the history of journalism, although it would benefit them greatly. I guess that’s what this reading is for though, to let us all know a little bit more about the history of journalism. I found it interesting to read about how important discussion is in journalism and the whole idea of what a public sphere was. I also noticed that a lot of the topics discussed in this reading were similar to things I wrote in my first journal. An example is on page 9 when the article talked about how there were two newspapers, one that was reliable and one that was considered gossip. I had mentioned that the qualities of a good journalist was to be honest and informed and this point kind of backs that up.

  • Would this class be considered a public sphere?
  • If the debate between Schudson and Stephens were two be reopened today, which side would win?
