For each section: Identify one or two passages (quotes) that resonate in some way and draw text-to-self, text-to-world, or text-to-text connections.
Introduction; “Here’s the point: broad education helped them to make those choices as they learned to see connections between liberal education and the specialty they would pursue.” I would put this one as text to text because in all the other readings we had they talked about how taking the broader courses would help us in many other aspects of our lives.
Liberal Arts and Creativity; “A liberal arts education afforded them the chance to enjoy a richer life because they could get more out of every moment and every experience.” Again I would put this quote as text to text, because of basically the same reason that these courses are extremely beneficial and help us get more out of education by broadening our horizons.
Engage with History and Justice; “Dean came to understand his own learning style and knew that he worked best when he had more freedom, when he could help design his own education.” I would describe this one as text to self because I’m trying to understand my own learning style and I too think that I work best with more freedom.
Freedom to Choose; “Much of Emma’s schooling and family life had nurtured deep approaches to learning and a concern for big issues in life.” I would connect this one as text to the world because in this case Emma kind of had her plan cut out for her and then was kind of questioning it and I think that’s the same with a lot of people/students who pick a specific major.
Selecting a Path. “I realized, he explained, that you are only one person in one period of time. Reading allows you to expand, to live other lives other times.” I connected this text to the world because I think a lot of people would benefit from reading or learning and realizing the world is not just about them and there is actually a lot to know/see. That’s why liberal arts courses are good because you learn a lot and the reading said history is a big part of the liberal arts as well.
- How many different ways of combining Bain, Scheuer, Ungar, and/or the Core Handbook can you come up with? Describe at least three possible relationships and make sure you’re putting at least two of the readings into a relationship at a time.
How taking these classes will benefit you in many aspects of life: All the readings (a quite obvious point made in all of them).
Talking about the liberal arts, a certain way of thinking and how it’s an important skill to have: scheur (critical thinking is valuable) + bain (how it helped students once they started thinking and exploring).
How liberal arts is actually very helpful when finding jobs and the success rate of students taking them is very high: Ungar (debunked the myth that they weren’t) Bain (mentioned how well the students that studied a lot of things but came back to one more specific thing were).
